I did trap on the 4th June as having the heads up from Ian & Sam, I had trapped the night before at home so decided to trap at my other site in the hope of a migrant, I did get one a Rush Veneer. Numbers at last are up but it was a bit disconcerting to have so many moths to go through. About five cups of tea and four hours later (I'm sure everyone else is faster) I managed to get most identified, I brought home over a dozen pots with micro's in which I still need to i/d from photo's. I put out the two traps and I'll post the actinic first and the mv results at a later post.
Actinic had 25 species with 10 Pale Tussock all outside the trap and bushes. A ladybird, and 4 Micro's all below for confirmation. Two really nice Small Elephant Hawk-moth which I haven't caught in years.
This one I don't know, help please.
Rush Veneer
I think Spuleria flavicaput?
I think Bactra lancealana?
Help as always needed, many thanks.
Well done Mel, those IDs all look good to me. Spuleria flavicaput must be the best moth name out there! Probably a good record, I've never seen it in Wales.
ReplyDeleteFirst one looks like Syndemis musculana. Last one is an Orange Ladybird.

Thanks George, I would have come to your evening trapping at Crosshands but in the end thought I should try and catch some migrants instead as the weather was good for them! Next time, I will come. I must say the Spuleria I did manage to get my tongue around, many I can't.
ReplyDeleteYes, a good show Mel. I`m still (!) going through my last Thursday night moths, if it`s any consolation. Will blog in due course.
ReplyDeleteThe orange ladybird is fairly regular these days in moth traps, but c 25 years ago, it was regarded as a scarcity. I seem to recall that the larvae feed on mildew (?) under sycamore leaves in damp situations. You can look up the status of Spuleria on Sam`s 2013 list - see link to right.

ReplyDeleteI also had my MV out on Thursday night and had a very productive night with 41 macros and a couple of micros. I am, still working out a few but when I have finished we should compare results "across the village!"
I rigged up a small tent of Pea and bean netting which seemed to work at keeping the magpies off although a few moths settled on it.

Thanks Ian and Dai I've left you a phone message.
