Pondering which plume

The above plume was awaiting me when I reached home from work today.  I'd be grateful if anyone could assist in an identification; I am struggling to figure it out.  Many thanks

  1. Hi Ali, my best guess would be dusky plume (Oidaematophorus lithodactyla) but it's not really the right flight period. Probably best to wait for someone who knows what they're talking about to confirm/contradict that though...

  2. O. lithodactyla might just about be possible at this time of year (they've been seen in September in Glam) but I don't think its knees are tufty enough. It is probably just a heavily marked Emmelina monodactyla. They look quite different with their wings unfurled, as in the photo, compared to when they are tightly furled at rest.

  3. If you've still got it, look at the upper pair of spurs on hind leg. If the one pointing away from the body is about twice the length of the one pointing toward the body then it's Emmelina.

  4. Hi all, thank you v much for your help!I've looked at the spurs and they do look longer, though it is a little difficult to tell. It does look a lot different with the wings unfurled. Having seen it at rest with them furled now it looks much more Emmelina monodactyla like. Thanks again all :)
