Notice: Daytime Carmarthenshire Moth Group field meeting/`get together`

Sam and I thought that our annual `get together` this year could take the form of a short field meeting, with hints on daytime recording of moths. The date chosen is Saturday 4th October, meeting about 1.45pm for a 2.00pm start and the location will be Gelli Aur Country Park, which although not now run as such by Carmarthenshire County Council, will be available through the kindness of the owner and Michael Smith (the part-time ranger at the site). The grid reference is SN595197 - turn off the B4300 (`South Tywi Valley road`) or off the A476 (Llandeilo to Cross Hands road). Do NOT confuse the Country Park with the agricultural college of the same name.
The location has a range of native and non-native trees and shrubs and good paths, giving an opportunity for Sam to give informal guidance on the best ways to sample for moths (particularly micros), so that we`ll all be prepared for the following 2015 season. A successful trapping session by Jon Baker and the Carmarthenshire Moth Group was held at Gelli Aur back in 2006, when several interesting species were recorded (see the link to the archived newsletters for that year).

Above: one of the huge Thuyas in the arboretum at Gelli Aur.

In case of inclement weather on the 4th of October, we have the following Saturday (same time etc) in reserve - please check the Carmarthenshire moth blog on the Thursday and Friday for confirmation.
Please try to attend and by all means bring along anyone else with a potential interest in moths.

  1. S*d's Law has come into force with a vengeance - October 4th and 11th are likely to be the only Saturdays in 2014 when I'm not available to attend!!

  2. We are likely to have another get together/day out in 2015 Chris (perhaps at Mynydd Mawr Woodland Park, Tumble - to further train on micro recording etc at this suitably varied site). I will make sure that Sam and I ask regarding your days away, so that it does n`t clash for you next year.
This year`s gathering was partly arranged, at rather short notice, to cater for the several Carms Moth Gp members who did n`t make it on to the Sept Micro Course (me included).
I trapped at home last night (first time for ages) but the catch was quite poor - will blog after I`ve gone through the micros (will doubtless be posting some of latter).

  3. I don't think I'll be able to make it either - I'm due to be in Oxford that weekend.
