Hummingbird Hawkmoths

Please keep an eye out for Hummers - there's a national influx that has reached Carmarthenshire.

These are the records I'm aware of so far:
1: 18/4/2014 1 in garden, Johnstown (Jon Baker)
2: 26/5/2014 1 on Lilac, Rhandirmwyn (Julian Friese)
3: 27/5/2014 1 Laugharne (Butterfly Conservation - Migrant Watch website)
4: 31/5/2014 1 on Red Campion, Cnwc-y-llwyn (Sam Bosanquet)
5: 1/6/2014 1 on Red Valerian, Bank Buildings Llandeilo (Paul Boston)
6: 9/6/2014 1 in garden, Garnant (Lizzie Wilberforce)
7: 10/6/2014 1 Llandeilo (Butterfly Conservation - Migrant Watch website)
8: 10/6/2014 1 on roadside Red Valerians, north of Felingwm-uchaf (Sam Bosanquet)
9: 11/6/2014 1 in garden near Felingwm-uchaf (Theresa Greenaway)
10: 14/6/2014 1 in garden, Saron, Llandysul (Sally Hall)
11: 15/6/2014 1 in garden, Johnstown (Jon Baker)
12: 15/6/2014 1 on Red Valerian, Bank Buildings Llandeilo (Paul Boston)
13: 15/6/2014 1 flew through garden, Cnwc-y-llwyn (Sam Bosanquet)

I'll try to keep this tally going during the summer... (indeed I think other contributors can edit it too)

Records from past years show that 2014 is already the 3rd best year for records, although I'm sure that observer coverage is helping that:

  1. They seem to have a big liking for red valerian flowers. Short lengths of stem (`pinched` from any wall-side plants), with roots will `take` quite well if anyone wishes to grow it.

  2. We had one here this pm on our Valerian - so they have reached Saron, Llandysul.

  3. Just had another 5 minutes ago in my garden here in Carmarthen. My second this year after one in the spring. I will take my camera out and try and get a photo (fat chance).

  4. Thanks Jon - I'd forgotten your spring one. I think that takes the tally to 11 in the county so far. Great fun!
