A huge sigh of relief

Almost nothing beats lying in the garden on the first sunny day of the year, especially after the wettest winter on record. I'm sure the butterflies, bumblebees and hoverflies feel the same - 1 each of Red Admiral, Peacock and Small Tortoiseshell were on the wing, and a Eupeodes sp hoverfly landed on my arm briefly.

Moths were also out in reasonable numbers last night: the outside light produced 3 Pale Brindled Beauty, 2 Oak Beauty, 2 Chestnut, 2 Tortricodes alternella, 1 March Moth, 1 Yellow Horned (photo), 1 Early Moth (photo) & 1 Dotted Border (photo).  Proper trapping is definitely needed!
